Product Description

Shaped like a star, this organic spice variant has an average of eight points where each point contains a single pea-sized anise seed. Unline many organic spices, star anise is actually a fruit of an oriental tree native to Southern China. Also often known as bead tree or margosa, organic anise star is an essential ingredient of the Baharat spice blend (Middle Eastern spice blend) and the Indian spice blend, Garam Masala.

Flavor and Cooking

Star anise whole is primarily used in Vietnamese and Chinese dishes, similar to the use of bay leaves in Western cooking. Star anise seeds have a warm, sweet, potent anise flavor. Both the seeds and the pods are used in cooking. Star anise spice blends really well with soups, beef, poultry dishes, and even tomato sauce. Star anise seeds are also used to infuse drinking water to give it a faint taste and aroma. Even though star anise is used primarily in cookies and other baked foods in Western culture, it can do wonders in meat dishes if used in the right quantity. Star anise seeds cannot be consumed directly due to their strong flavor hence they are usually added in the final stages of cooking.

Health Benefits

Star anise contains shikimic acid, and hence it is widely used to treat cough and flu symptoms. Star anise pods have been an integral part of Chinese medicine for centuries, and Western medicine has already recognized its antimicrobial properties. Star anise is also said to be a good remedy against diabetes and ageing symptoms since it is rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A and Vitamin C. This organic spice also helps with indigestion and constipation.
